7-year-old child whose last wish was to be buried beside his mum’s grave lost his life to cancer

It’s indeed tragic when you are faced with losing loved ones. But it’s totally devastating when you have to prepare for your child’s funeral while having to fulfill the wish your child made on his death-bed—and all this soon after burying your wife!

Piotr Kwansy was shattered after he unexpectedly lost his wife to cancer in 2011; their son was very young at that time. Agnieszka Kwansy was diagnosed with sarcoma cancer that quickly spread throughout her body. “She only weighed 20 kg (44 pounds) when we lost her,” Piotr said according to media reports.

While they were still trying to pick up the pieces and come to terms with their loss, Piotr was dealt another heartbreaking blow. In 2013, Piotr’s son, Filip, was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis Type-1, a genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow on nerves.

Flip had been in treatment at London’s Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital for last year. Seeing that his treatment had failed, he wished to be buried alongside his mother. Sadly, Filip passed away on the morning of  24 March 2017.

Filip underwent general treatment in Poland and he showed a little improvement, and his father was expecting that  he would continue improving. Then, to his dismay, Filip’s health spiraled down and Piotr knew that his son condition was extremely serious.

“Filip started having nose bleeds and his legs were hurting. I took him to the doctor here and he said that there’s nothing wrong with him and that perhaps he is tired. I insisted that they need to do some more tests, because he was already diagnosed with type 1 and I knew there was something wrong,” he said.

“I think all parents know when there’s something wrong with their child. They ordered more blood tests and discovered that he was suffering from severe anaemia and juvenile myelomonocytic leukaemia (JMML),” Piotr Kwansy said.

Filip underwent chemotherapy in a hospital in Cambridge in September and November last year. Unfortunately Filps’s body did not respond, even the stem cell transplants that he received in January this year did not work.

“We lost all hope at the beginning of March this year when the doctors said that there was nothing that they can do apart from mange his pain,” said his devastated dad.

“His liver had stopped working so he also receiving plasma every other day. His abdomen has collected a lot of fluid and is enlarged, which causes him lots of pain and pushes up on his lungs, so he has difficulty breathing. He cannot eat as he throws up. He is either drowsy or screaming in pain. It’s heartbreaking for me to watch. He knows that he is dying and that there’s nothing they can do for him. He knows that he doesn’t have much time left, we both do,” Piotr said.

All Filip wanted was to be near his mother in Poland, where she is buried, so that ‘she can look after him in heaven’. “I don’t know how well he remembers his mother, as he was so young when she passed away, but he has visited her grave when he was well enough to speak to her,” Piotr said.

“He says that I’m his angel that is looking after him here and that his mom will look after him when he is in heaven,” he added

Together friends and family helped Filip set up a Just Giving campaign to raise money to fulfill this wish. The campaign had a target of raising 6,500 pounds (US$8,116) to help Filip be buried with his mother but by the time it was closed it had raised over 41,000 pounds (US$51,172).

Filip also sent a thank you from his bed to everyone who donated saying, “Thanks for helping make my wish come true.”

“Knowing that you are losing a child is devastating, but knowing that you are financially unable to fulfill their last wish must be shattering,” said Rhys Goode, a spokeswoman for Just Giving that has now closed the donation page for Filip.

“We are so pleased that the JustGiving community came together to enable Filip to fulfill his last wish. Our thoughts are with the family at this time.”

It’s so sad to have to watch one so young depart, it really teaches us to cherish life.
